چکیده

Studies of the observed characteristics of black–hole (BH) X–ray binaries can be provide us with valuable information about the process of BH formation. In this paper I address some of the aspects of our current understanding of BH formation in binaries and point out some of the existing problems of current theoretical models. In particular, the measured orbital periods and donor–star properties indicate that a common–envelope phase appears to be a necessary ingredient of the evolutionary history of observed BH X–ray transients, and that it must be associated only with a modest orbital contraction. The timing of this common–envelope phase is crucial in determining the final BH masses and current evolutionary models of mass–losing massive stars place strong constraints on the possible masses for immediate BH progenitors and wind mass loss from helium stars. Last, it is interesting that, even in the absence of any source of mass loss, the highest helium–star masses predicted by current evolutionary models are still not high enough to account for the measured BH mass in V404 Cyg (> 10 M⊙). An alternative for the formation of relatively massive BH may be provided by the evolutionary sequence proposed by Eggleton & Verbunt (1986), which invokes hierarchical triples as progenitors of BH X–ray binaries with low–mass companions.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Formation and Evolution of Black Hole X-ray Transient Systems

We study the formation of low-mass black hole X-ray binaries with main sequence companions that have formed through case C mass transfer (mass transfer following the helium core burning phase of the black hole progenitor). We identify these objects with the observed soft X-ray transients. Although this scenario requires a set of fine tuned conditions, we are able to produce a current Galactic p...

On the peak radio and X-ray emission from neutron star and black hole candidate X-ray transients

We have compiled and analysed reports from the literature of (quasi-)simultaneous observations of X-ray transients at radio and X-ray wavelengths and compared them with each other and with more unusual radio-bright sources such as Cygnus X-3, GRS 1915+105 and Circinus X-1. There exists a significant (> 97% likelihood) positive (rank) correlation between the peak X-ray flux PX and radio flux den...

Theoretical Black Hole Mass Distributions

We derive the theoretical distribution function of black hole masses by studying the formation processes of black holes. We use the results of recent 2D simulations of core-collapse to obtain the relation between remnant and progenitor masses and fold it with an initial mass function for the progenitors. We examine how the calculated black-hole mass distributions are modified by (i) strong wind...
